  • Description

China and Nepal have signed a new border agreement. Officially termed a Protocol it more accurately defines the border between Nepal and the Chinese autonomous region of Tibet, without making specific changes. Chinese Foreign Minister Huang Hua flew to Nepal for the signing.

SYNOPSIS: Mr. Huang and his wife were met in Katmandu by Nepalese Foreign Minister K.B. Shahi.

It was a traditional Nepalese welcome. While Mr. Huang had come specifically to sign the border agreement there was also time for talks on China's economic aid to Nepal and discussions on international affairs including the situations in Iran, Afghanistan and South-east Asia. The border separating Nepal and Tibet has been the subject of several agreements. One was signed in 1961 and another two years later. The new protocol gives a more scientific and accurate delineation of the border.

The signing took place at the Nepalese Foreign Ministry. Mr. Huang said later he though there were now broad prospects for the continuing development of friendly relations and co-operation between China and Nepal. He said the border question had been settled a long time ago, the protocol just perfected it. Asked whether China's border dispute with India could be resolved in the same way, he said he hoped so, but declined to say when. From Nepal Mr. Huang flew to Burma.
