  • Description

KENYA IS PLAYING HOST THIS WEEK TO ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT CONFERENCE TO BE HELD IN NAIROBI SINCE THE COUNTRY GAINED INDEPENDENCE - THE 17TH ANNUAL ASSEMBLY OF THE INTERNATIONAL PRESS INSTITUTE. PRESIDENT JOMO KENYATTA YESTERDAY (MONDAY) OFFICIALLY OPENED THE MEETING, WHICH IS BEING ATTENDED BY 120 PROMINENT EDITORS, PUBLISHERS AND JOURNALISTS FROM NEWSPAPERS IN MORE THAN 50 COUNTRIES.

ONLY COUNTRIES WHICH PRACTICE FREEDOM OF THE PRESS ARE ALLOWED TO BE MEMBERS OF THE INTERNATIONAL PRESS INSTITUTE (IPI). TOMORROW, THE LAST DAY OF THE NAIROBI MEETING, THERE WILL BE A SPEECH ON "THE PROFESSIONAL JOURNALIST AND THE AUTHORITARIAN THREAT" BY HELEN VLACHOS, WHO CLOSED HER NEWSPAPER IN GREECE RATHER THAN SUBMIT TO THE CENSORSHIP OF THE NEW RIGHT-WING MILITARY REGIME IN ATHENS.

IN HIS OPENING SPEECH YESTERDAY, PRESIDENT KENYATTA SAID THE ROLE OF THE PRESS SHOULD BE "TO EDUCATE PEOPLE THROUGH ACCURACY IN FACTS AND TOLERANCE IN JUDGEMENTS, AND TO BRING THE PEOPLES AND NATIONS OF THE WORLD INTO CLOSER UNDERSTANDING AND TO UNITE MANKIND THROUGH THE DIGNITY OF HUMAN STRIVING IN A CLIMATE OF PEACE."
PRESIDENT KENYATTA SAID THAT HIS OWN EXPERIENCE IN THE EARLY PART OF THE LIFE AS A JOURNALIST, BOTH AS THE EDITOR OF A KENYA VERNACULAR NEWSPAPER AND AS A CONTRIBUTOR TO MANY WELL-KNOWN BRITISH NEWSPAPERS, HAD HELPED HIM TO ACQUIRE "SOME GRASP OF THE PROBLEMS WHICH FACE BOTH JOURNALISTS AND POLITICIANS", AND THE MISTRUST WITH WHICH JOURNALISTS AND POLITICIANS REGARD EACH OTHER.
