  • Description

Mexican world bantamweight boxing champion, Rodolfo Martinez retained his title when he was awarded a split-decision points victory over Thailand's Venice Sor in Bangkok on Friday (30 January).

Martinez, the 29-year-old World Boxing Council (WBC) champion, took a mandatory eight count in the second round but bounced back into contention with continuous jabbing.

His probing left had fully closed the eye of the southpaw challenger.

It was a bruising, brawling type of fight that was full of incidents. The first came int he tenth round when Venice raised his hands, apparently signalling he'd had enough.

However, after the referee consulted both the boxer and his handlers, the fight resumed.

From that point Venice launched a tremendous late surge that nearly gained him a win. His body punching was so powerful that during the 13th round he drove both himself and his opponent through the ropes and out of the ring.

Neutral U.S. referee Jay Edson scored the match 145-141 and Mexican judge Juan Cabrera scored it 145-140 ... both in favour of the champion. Thi judge Boonsom Kerdmanee gave it to Venice 143-142.
