  • Description

ON LAKE MAGADI IN KENYA, 300,000 FLEDGLING FLAMINGOES ARE FACED WITH A SLOW DEATH BECAUSE OF A CONCENTRATION OF SODA IN THE LAKE. THE SODA DRIES ROCK HARD AROUND THE LEGS OF THE YOUNG FLAMINGOES AND STOPS THEM FROM FLYING OR WALKING. MANY STARVE OR BECOME EASY VICTIMS FOR BIRDS OF PREY.

A TEAM OF THREE PEOPLE - A BRITISH WILD LIFE PHOTOGRAPHER, MR. ALAN ROOT, OF BATTERSEA, LONDON, HIS WIFE, JOAN, AND A CAMBRIDGE STUDENT, MR. DOUGLAS WISE - ARE TRYING TO SAVE MANY OF THE YOUNG FLAMINGOES BY SCRAPING OFF THE CAKES OF SODA AROUND THE LEGS OF THE FLAMINGOES.

IT IS ESTIMATED THAT THERE ARE 2,000,000 FLAMINGOES - ABOUT 90 PER CENT OF THE WORLD'S POPULATION - AROUND LAKE MAGADI BUT EXPERTS SAY THAT IF NOTHING IS DONE TO SAVE THE YOUNG FLEDGLINGS, THE FLAMINGO MAY BE VIRTUALLY EXTINCT IN SIX OR SEVEN YEARS.

IN THE PAST FIVE YEARS, THE FLAMINGOES HAVE BEEN BADLY HIT BY NATURAL DISASTERS. A DROUGHT HAS DRIVEN THEM AWAY FROM THEIR TRADITIONAL BREEDING GROUND IN LAKE NATRON IN NORTHERN TANGANYIKA. ON ANOTHER LAKE, THEIR NESTS WERE FLOODED WHEN THE DROUGHT BROKE.
