Background: Mr. G. S. Jones, Chief Secretary and Acting Governor of Nyasaland, nominated by Her Majesty as the next Governor, paid his first visit to Kota Kota, Oct. 22. Mr. Jones will succeed Sir Robert Armitage who is due to retire in April, 1961.

Kota Kota was the scene of the recent Malawi Congress Delegates Conference. The Malawi Congress Party is led by Dr. Banda. Mr. Jones is favoured by the party, for he was responsible for the release on Sept 27 of the last 14 Africans detained under the Nyasaland emergency regulations.

Mr. Jones became a cadet in Northern Rhodesia in 1933, transferring to Nyasaland only this year. He served as a District Officer in Northern Rhodesia from 1933 until 1951, when he became Commissioner for Native Development. Four years later, he became Provincial Commissioner; and was appointed Secretary for Native Affairs in 1958. Last year, he was made Minister of Native Affairs, and earlier this year became Chief Secretary in Nyasaland. Mr. Smith was born in 1908.

Less than 100 years ago, Kota Kota was the main centre for the East African slave trade. Thousands of slaves and ivory tusks were shipped across Lake Nyasa on the first part of their long journey to the coast and Zanzibar.
