Background: A state of emergency was called in Nelson City, New Zealand recently after torrential rain caused a river to break its banks. The flooding caused widespread damage and the loss of two lives.

The river broke its banks after several days of heavy rain. The flood water tore away footbridges and damaged property along the river banks. Essential services were cut off in some of the worst hit areas of the city.

An 88-year-old woman was sleeping when a wall of mud slipped down a hill and demolished her house. Rescue workers managed to extract her but she died before she reached hospital.

Another 66-year-old woman was swept to her death by the floodwaters.

The floods are the worst to hit Nelson for forty years. The city is the centre of a major fruitgrowing and tourist area.
