  • Description

A DETACHMENT OF NINETY MEN IN A CONVOY OF SIXTY VEHICLES LEFT ADELAIDE ON APRIL 20 TO ESTABLISH A BASE CAMP AT MULOORINA STATION, IN THE FAR NORTH OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA, WHERE THEY'LL PREPARE FOR DONALD CAMPBELL'S ATTEMPT ON THE WORLD LAND SPEED RECORD NEXT MONTH.

MR. ANDREW MUSTARD, PROJECT OPERATIONS MANAGER, AND RELIEF DRIVER, SAID THAT IT WAS HOPED TO HAVE A BASE CAMP SET UP AT MULOORINA STATION SOON.

THE DEPUTY POLICE COMMISSIONER, MR. LEANE, INSPECTED THE POLICE AND ARMY PERSONNEL BEFORE THE SIXTY VEHICLE CONVOY LEFT FROM KESWICK BARRACKS FOR THE MULOORINA STATION.

INSPECTOR CLIFF BREBNER THE OFFICER IN CHARGE OF THE POLICE ARMY SUPPORT UNIT, SAID THAT MOST OF THE PERSONNEL TRAVELLING WITH THE CONVOY WERE NEW TO THE WORK WHICH LAY AHEAD. ONLY ONE ARMY MEMBER AND EIGHT POLICE OFFICERS WERE MAKING THEIR SECOND TRIP TO LAKE EYRE.

THE CONVOY WAS UNABLE TO MAINTAIN ITS LINES THROUGH HEAVY CITY TRAFFIC WHEN IT LEFT KESWICK BARRACKS, BUT IT HAD BEEN ARRANGED FOR THE VEHICLES TO ASSEMBLE ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF THE CITY.

THE BLUEBIRD CAR EVEN THOUGH COVERED BY TARPAULIN STILL PRESENTED A FAMILIAR OUTLINE. BUT ITS PROGRESS OUT TO THE ASSEMBLY POINT, APPEARED TO ATTRACT LITTLE ATTENTION FROM PEOPLE IN THE STREETS OR FROM PASSING TRAFFIC.
