Background: The President of the United States, high military officers and even some master sargeants get free housing from the federal government. The forgotten man is the vice president, but that situation may soon be corrected.

This tregaron--the lavish estate in the heart of Washington that the late Ambassador Joseph E. Davies offered to the government as a residence for the vice president. Davies, who was buried yesterday, had served under three presidents. Since 1800, when John Adams moved into the White House, we have always provided our chief of state with a rent-free home. Vice Presidents have never rated that extra benefit--Richard Nixon only recently bought himself a $75,000 home.

Tregaron is lavish--perhaps more so then the White House. It covers 19 acres--has its own 9 hole golf course.

Congressional approval is necessary before the government can accept the Davies' gift--similar offers have been rejected in the past--but this time Congress may decide our vice presidents should have an official residence.
