  • Description

POLICE AND DEMONSTRATORS CLASHED AGAIN TODAY (SATURDAY) AS THE SOUTH AFRICAN RUGBY TEAM CONTINUED ITS DEMONSTRATION PLAGUED TOUR WITH AN INTERNATIONAL MATCH AGAINST IRELAND. ABOUT FOUR THOUSAND PEOPLE MARCHED THROUGH DUBLIN TO THE GROUND WHERE THEY WERE CONFRONTED BY ABOUT 1200 POLICEMEN.

THE PRIME MINISTER OF IRELAND, MR. LYNCH AND THE PRESIDENT, MR. DE VALERA PROTESTED IN THEIR OWN WAY BY BOYCOTTING THE GAME. ANOTHER WELL KNOWN FIGURE, MISS BERNADETTE DEVLIN, WAS AMONG THE PEOPLE HEADING THE DEMONSTRATORS AS THEY MARCHED TO THE GROUND.

A NUMBER OF DEMONSTRATORS ATTEMPTED TO STOP THE BUS BRINGING THE SPRINGBOK TEAM TO THE GROUND. THEY WERE SWIFTLY DEALT WITH BY POLICE. FOR THE MOST PART THE DEMONSTRATION WAS PEACEFUL UNTIL HALF TIME WHEN STEWARDS CALLED FOR AN ORDERLY WITHDRAWAL FROM OUTSIDE THE GROUND.

TROUBLE STARTED WHEN A SMALL GROUP AMONG THE DEMONSTRATORS TRIED TO STORM ONE OF THE GATES LEADING ONTO THE STADIUM. SCUFFLING BROKE OUT AS POLICE MOVED IN AND WERE PELTED BY THE CROWD AND BOOED.

THERE WERE NO INCIDENTS INSIDE THE GROUND WHERE IRELAND MANAGED TO SNATCH A TRY DURING INJURY TIME TO DRAW THE MATCH. THE SPRINGBOKS WERE ON TOP FOR MOST OF THE MATCH AND WERE LEADING 8-5 AT THE START OF TIME ON. THEN THEY GAVE AWAY A PENALTY KICK STRAIGHT IN FRONT OF THE GOAL. IRELAND CONVERTED AND THE MATCH ENDED IN AN 8 ALL DRAW.
