  • Description

The Chinese Vice Premier Teng Hsiao-ping, has been talking to an American journalist about the present wall poster campaign in Peking and about the top level meeting of China's leaders which has been taking place for some days. Amongst the dozens of new posters appearing on what has been called "Democracy Wall", there have been calls for Mr Teng to be made premier, the post held by Chairman Hua-feng.

SYNOPSIS: Robert Novak, a well-known columnist in the United States, discussed the poster campaign with Mr Teng when they met. Mr Teng said he had been offered the premiership, but had rejected it because, being in his seventies, he was too old.

Mr Teng said the Chinese leader-ship was meeting to discuss their modernisation programme, but he stressed there were no differences between himself and Chairman Hua. He said he supported the present upsurge of discussion and told Mr Novak: "There should be a liveliness and ease of mind in the political life of the country."
