    THE SUDAN PRIME MINISTER, SAYED SADDIK EL MAHDI, YESTERDAY (FRIDAY), CALLED ON THE SUDANESE PEOPLE TO KEEP THEIR UNITY AND PROMISED TO STRENGTHEN THE ARMY TO FACE ANY OUTSIDE THREATS AGAINST THE COUNTRY'S TERRITORIES. HE WAS SPEAKING AT THE CELEBRATIONS COMMEMORATING THE SECOND ANNIVERSARY OF THE COUP WHICH OUSTED GENERAL IBRAHIM ABBOUD'S MILITARY REGIME.

    THE ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS WERE MARKED BY A PARADE OF SUDAN ARMY UNITS WATCHED BY THE PRIME MINISTER AND PRESIDENT ISMAIL AL AZAHARI.

    THE PRIME MINISTER SAID REFUGEES WERE POURING BACK TO THEIR VILLAGES IN SOUTHERN SUDAN - SCENE OF ARMED CLASHES BETWEEN SEPARATIST AND GOVERNMENT FORCES - AND THAT CONSIDERABLE PROGRESS WAS BEING MADE TO HOLD ELECTIONS FOR A CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY.

    HE ADDED THAT THE PRESENT COALITION GOVERNMENT WOULD CONTINUE FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE COUNTRY.

    A VAST CROWD WATCHED UNITS FROM ALL SUDANESE MILITARY SERVICES TAKING PART IN THE IMPRESSIVE PARADE.
