Background: NINA II, A CLOSE COPY OF THE SMALLEST OF COLUMBUS'S THREE SHIPS WHICH SAILED TO THE "NEW WORLD", REACHED SAN SALVADOR IN THE BAHAMAS ON CHRISTMAS DAY, DECEMBER 25. THIS WAS 117 DAYS AFTER SAILING FROM SPAIN IN AN EFFORT TO RE-ENACT THE DISCOVERY OF AMERICA.

THE SHIP SAILED FROM PALOS, SPAIN, WITH A NINE-MAN CREW ON SEPTEMBER 19, HOPING TO REACH SAN SALVADOR AT THE EASTERN FRINGE OF THE BAHAMAS, ON OCTOBER 12, DUPLICATING COLUMBUS'S LANDFILL IN 1492.

COLUMBUS'S THREE SHIPS, THE SANTA MARIA, PINTA AND NINA, SAILED FROM SPAIN ON AUGUST 3, 1492, WITH 120 MEN AND MADE THE VOYAGE IN 70 DAYS.

NINA II WAS BUILT FROM PLANS OF THE NINA IN THE COLUMBUS MUSEUM IN SPAIN. SHE CARRIED NO RADIO, ENGINE OR OTHER MODERN EQUIPMENT. THE CREW LIVED ON THE SAME TYPE FOOD AS THE ORIGINAL CREW -- LENTILS, HONEY, RICE, BEANS AND BISCUITS -- AND WERE CLAD IN 15TH CENTURY GARB.

A NATIVE BAHAMIAN ORCHESTRA, PLAYING "WHEN THE SAINTS COME MARCHING IN", AND A CROWD OF 300 GREETED THE CREW OF NINA II WHEN THEY MADE THEIR FORMAL LANDING ON BOXING DAY, DECEMBER 26. THE CREW WOULD SAY NOTHING ABOUT THEIR VOYAGE. THIS WAS AT THE REQUEST OF 28-YEAR-OLD ROBERT MARX, THE ONLY AMERICAN AMONG THE CREW WHO HOPES TO SELL EXCLUSIVE ARTICLES AND FILM RIGHTS OF THE VOYAGE.

THE VOYAGE WAS NOT WITHOUT INCIDENT. THE SHIP WAS LOST FOR DAYS AT ONE POINT DURING THE TRIP AND A SERIOUS FRESH WATER SHORTAGE DEVELOPED DURING THE LAST THREE WEEKS, FORCING THE CREW TO DRINK SEA WATER MIXED WITH WINE.
