  • Description

More than two thousand mourners crowded the street outside the Oakland Church where the funeral service was being held on Saturday (28 August) for George Jackson--the "Soledad Brother" shot during an escape bid from San Quentin Prison last week.

People in the orderly crowd wept as Black Panther leaders speaking through an amplifier from the small Episcopal church described Jackson, a 29-year-old "Field Marshal" in the Party, as a "hero" of the struggle for black freedom.

The only incident occurred when the crowd tried to push into the 200-seat church. But Jackson's mother Georgia, leaning from a second floor window, appealed to them to move back. They obeyed her immediately.

Black Panther leader Huey Newton, who holds the party title of "Minister of Information", said Jackson was a "hero" and added "We should raise our children to fight for freedom the way George did."
"They can't kill all of us the way they did George." he said. "We will advance wave upon wave and will slit every throat that will threaten our lives and freedom."
The following is a transcript of part of Newton's speech to the crowd.
