  • Description

Gay Brewer of the United States won the world's richest golf tournament, the Pacific Masters, at Inzai, near Tokyo on Sunday (8 October). The 300,000 dollars (U.S.) match was won in a sudden-death extra playoff, after Brewer and Australia's David Graham carded equal scores at the end of regulation play and again at the end of the initial three-hole playoff.

Eighty-four golfers from seven countries were in pursuit of the 65,000 dollar (U.S.) first prize at the Sobu Country Club. Brewer could have made the win easier for himself had be he sunk a six-foot putt at the seventy-second hole. Instead, he battled through three holes of the first playoff, before finally beating Graham on the fourth and sudden-death hole.

Graham took second place and 32,500 dollars, while Charles Coody of the United States finished third. The win for Brewer was his second major tournament success of the year, having already won the Canadian Open.
