    At the Seventh International Conference of the OCEAC (Organisation of Central African States) in Fort Lamy, prime importance was given to the recent outbreak of cholera in Chad. 1,500 people have already died from the disease, and President Francois Tombalbaye of Chad has sent an urgent appeal for help to the European Development Fund in Brussels.

    Five nations took part in the conference, including Cameroun, Congo-Brazzaville, the Central African Republic, Gabon, and Chad. In addition observers from international organisations such as UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund) were also present.

    SYNOPSIS: A conference of the O-C-E-A-C, Organisation of Central African States, opened in Fort Lamy last week, presided over by Jacques Baroum, the Minister of Public Health and Social Affairs from Chad.

    Cameroun, Congo-Brazzaville, the Central African Republic, Gabon, and Chad were the nations represent ed at the conference. In addition, observers from organisations, such as the United States, Agency for International Development, were also in attendance.

    A great deal of discussion was given over to the recent outbreak of cholera in Chad. Fifteen-hundred people have already died in that country from the disease, which has affected several other western African states. Each of the member countries related their experiences with the disease, and the international organisations were quick to offer their assistance.

    Other topics for discussion during the conference included organisation of public health services, a health education programme, and the supplying of vaccines against smallpox and measles. The latter two projects are to be undertaken with American aid.
