  • Description

    VISNEWS Feb 14. filmed
an invention by Norwegian engineer Trygve Thune designed to localize oil
pollution to the ship responsible when anchored in harbour.

A 'fence' of plastic-coated linen strips, about 50 yards long and 3 feet wide,
stiffened with aluminium rods is laid around oil polluted areas to isolate it
from spreading. The offending oil is then pumped from the water into a lighter
    or similar craft.

Joined together by strings and weighted at intervals to obviate drift, the
'fence' is anchored and directed by towing craft at each end. Two feet rides
above surface and one foot below.

A new legislation in consequence of the International Convention for Prevention
of Oil Pollution at Sea, brought into force 26th July 1958, makes it necessary
for ships to guard themselves against accidents oil pollution in harbours.
