  • Description

It was a mixed day for the men's seeds at the Wimbledon Tennis Championships on Friday (25 June). Fifth seeded Italian Adriano Panatta lost to Charlie Pasarell of the U.S.A. But another American, fifth-seeded Roscoe Tanner, eliminated his opponent, Carlos Kirmayr of Brazil and sixth seed Argentine Guillermo Vilas, met Alex Metreveli of the U.S.S.R.

SYNOPSIS: Vilas -- bearer camera -- didn't start well and won most of his early points from mistakes by Metreveli. But although the Russian lost this point, he went on to take the first set six-two.

Vilas has won the Commercial Union Grand Prix twice running and has won over half a million US dollars (about GBP 277 sterling) prize money in the past two years. And it wasn't long before he regained his form at Wimbledon to win the second and third set.

It was five games to four to Vilas in the fourth set as Metreveli served. The score stood at 30 all.

The score was 30-40 as Metrevali served to save the match. Vilas returned and the Russian looked as though he had pulled it off with a wide volley. But the young Argentine returned with a passing shot to win two-sex, seven-five, six-two, six-four. He now goes through to the fourth round.
