Background: A PROTOTYPE OF THE DORNIER 31E WENT THROUGH ITS PACES AT A MUNICH AIRPORT TODAY (TUESDAY). THE OCCASION PROVIDED WHAT IS BELIEVED TO BE THE FIRST OPPORTUNITY OF FLIGHT TESTING A VERTICAL SHORT TAKE-OF JET TRANSPORT.

THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE AIRCRAFT WAS PRECEDED BY RESEARCH WORK PERFORMED IN WIND TUNNELS AND FLIGHT SIMULATORS, BY FREE-FLIGHT MODELS AND BY FLYING-RIGS. THE END PRODUCT IS A LIGHT MILITARY TRANSPORT AIRCRAFT WITH A PAYLOAD OF THREE TO FOUR TONS.

THE AIRCRAFT PROVIDES BOTH CONVENTIONAL TAKE-OFFS AND LANDING ON RUNWAYS AND VERTICAL TAKE-OFFS AND LANDINGS ON UNPREPARED SITES. THE NECESSITY FOR THIS ARISES FROM THE LOGISTICAL REQUIREMENTS OF MODERN WARFARE. THE BATTLE ZONE TRANSPORT AIRCRAFT MUST BE CAPABLE OF OPERATING CLOSE TO THE TROOPS TO BE SUPPLIED IRRESPECTIVE OF THE AVAILABILITY OF RUNWAYS.
