Background: In Jakarta on Wednesday (21 February), the visiting Australian Prime Minister, Mr. Gough Whitlam, went to the city's national cemetary to lay a wreath on the tomb of one of Indonesia's soldiers:
Mr. Whitlam, who was elected to power in last year's general elections in Australia, was later to suggest a grouping of Asian countries which would include Japan, Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand, and the People's Republic of China.
The Prime Minister, who was on the second day of his official visit to Indonesia, was to have meetings with Indonesian leaders to discuss his idea, although no agreements were reached in the early stages.
During his cemetary visit, Mr. Whitlam paid tribute to the courage of the Indonesians who died during the Second World War, and to those who died during the struggle for independence immediately after the war.
