Background: Clifford Pain and Frank Brown of London were nearly non-starters from Paris in the Monte Carlo Rally, Jan 19. Their Ford Zephyr was in a collision on the way to the start and its radiator badly damaged. They were able to borrow another and joined the other 49 starters.
The elimination of part of the Paris route saved British drivers Pat Moss - sister of the famous Stirling - and Ann Wisdom from Penalization. They arrived late at Gerardmer after fuel trouble. Fortunately for them snowdrifts forced officials to hold all drivers there to keep the time-table after the route was shortened.
The 2,000 mile route will take them through Bulfort, Boulogne, Blois, Mauriac, Chambery and them onto Monte Carlo where they are due to start arriving at 12:15 hours, GMT, Jan 21.
There were over 320 starters from nine points - Glasgow, Stockholm, The Hague, Paris, Warsaw (for the first time), Munich, Lisbon, Rome and Athens. After zig-zagging across Europe for three days, those that arrive within the specified period will be faced with a 270 mile final Classification test.
The Rally was first run in 1911, organized by Anthony Noghes. Than twenty-two cars took part with starting points at Paris, Boulogne, Madrid, Rome, Berlin, Vienna, Brussels, Amsterdam, Geneva, Lisbon and St. Petersburg, Russia. The following year eighty-six cars started. There wasn't another Rally until 1924. Year by year the number of entries increased until after the second world war the organizers introduced a selection system, limiting the umber to 360.
