    IN SAIGON THOUSANDS OF SOUTH VIETNAMESE ATTENDED A MEMORIAL SERVICE ON SUNDAY FOR NGUYEN TUONG TAM, THE WRITER-POLITICIAN WHO COMMITTED SUICIDE LAST JULY IN PROTEST AGAINST THE DIEM GOVERNMENT'S TREATMENT OF THE BUDDHISTS.

    THE 58 YEAR-OLD POLITICIAN WAS NOTED AS THE COUNTRY'S LEADING WRITER FOR A SERIES OF SOCIAL AND PHILOSOPHICAL WORKS. HE COMMITTED SUICIDE BY TAKING POISON SHORTLY AFTER THE BUDDHIST MONK, QUANG DUC, HAD BURNT HIMSELF TO DEATH IN PROTEST AGAINST ANTI-BUDDHIST TREATMENT. IN A NOTE, NGUYEN TUSNG TAM COMPARED HIS SUICIDE TO THAT OF THE MONK.

    MANY LEADING BUDDHISTS AND POLITICIANS WERE AMONG THOSE WHO ATTENDED THE MEMORIAL SERVICE.
