President Celal Bayar of Turkey accompanied by his wife, was filmed by VISNEWS June 8 arriving at Rome's Ciampino Airport to begin a four-day official visit. They were greeted by Italian President and Madame Gronchi.
After the various presentations, and inspection of a guard of honour, the two Presidents drove to the capital. President Bayar will stay at the Quirinal Palace.
His visit repays President Gronchi's official visit to Turkey in 1957. It is the first time that a head of the Turkish nation has made an official visit to Italy.
President Bayar is also accompanied by Foreign Minister Zorlu; General Rustu Erdelhun, Chief of Turkish General Staff, and other Parliamentarians.
Officially there will be no military conferences, though the Turkish party is expected to visit the Naples headquarters of NATO before returning to Turkey by sea.
In the light of Russian Premier Kruschev's recent visit and remarks in Albania, it should be noted that Turkey and Italy have this in common; they alone among the Mediterranean Powers have accepted the principle of the installation of missile bases on their national soil.
