  • Description

UNITED STATES NAVY RIVER BOATS SOME OF THEM FITTED WITH HELICOPTER LANDING PADS HAVE STARTED PATROLLING THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE RIVERS WEST OF SAIGON SEARCHING FOR VIET CONG SUPPLY DUMPS ALONG THE BANKS.

UNITED STATES SOLDIERS ARE USING THE BOATS AS MOBILE BASES, LANDING AT INTERVALS ALONG THE BANKS AND USING LONG WOODEN POLES AND METAL DETECTORS TO LOCATE ARMS CACHES. BEFORE THE SOLDIERS LAND THE BANKS ARE SPRAYED WITH MACHINE GUN AND MORTAR FIRE FROM THE BOATS. THE RIVERINE PATROL IS CALLED 'OPERATION SLINGSHOT'
UNITED STATES SOURCES SAY THAT THE PATROLS HAVE ALREADY FOUND MORE THAN 7 TONS OF WEAPONS AND MUNITIONS HIDDEN UNDERGROUND AND UNDERWATER ALONG THE RIVERBANK. THEY BELIEVE THAT THE CACHES, SOME OF THEM ONLY TWO WEEKS OLD HAVE BEEN LAID DOWN TO SUPPLY VIET CONG AND NORTH VIETNAMESE TROOPS DURING AN ADVANCE ON SAIGON, AND THAT THE EQUIPMENT IS BEING CARRIED INTO SOUTH VIETNAM BY OX-CARTS AND THEN FLOATED ALONG THE MANY SMALL STREAMS AND CREEKS TO THE MAIN WATERWAYS.
