Background: The annual competition and sale of Charolais cattle at Vichy, France, attracted buyers from the People's Republic of China for the first time this year. They joined more than 200 buyers from 22 countries in bidding for about 500 prize animals.
The world beef shortage has focused attention on possible breeding improvements that could add to the rate of growth and ultimate size of cattle. The Charolais are rated among the best in both categories. France, the home of the Charolais bread, is now one of the leading producers of breeding bulls.
This year's Grand Prize was won by a three-year-old bull called Feodal, weighing 3018 pounds (1,372 kilos). The show is run under the auspices of the International Association of the Charolais Herd Book, a group formed to protect and improve the bread.
Almost 200 French ranches specialising in the Charolais breed participated is this year's show. They exhibited 53 bulls, 115 cows, and 190 calves.
