  • Description

THREE THOUSAND UNIVERSITY STUDENTS IN ATHENS YESTERDAY, (SATURDAY), STAGED ONE OF THE BIGGEST ANTI-WESTERN DEMONSTRATIONS SEEN IN THE GREEK CAPITAL IN RECENT YEARS. THE DEMONSTRATION OCCURRED AS VIOLENCE RETURNED TO CYPRUS, WHERE ONE GREEK-CYPRIOT WAS KILLED IN AN OUTBREAK OF FIGHTING THAT ENDED A TEN DAY LULL ON THE TROUBLED ISLAND.

EVERY AVAILABLE POLICEMAN WAS CALLED OUT TO CONTROL THE CROWD, WHILE SENIOR OFFICERS VAINLY ATTEMPTED TO PERSUADE STUDENT LEADERS TO CALL OFF THE MARCH THROUGH THE STREETS. AT THE AMERICAN EMBASSY THEY SHOUTED SLOGANS CALLING PRESIDENT JOHNSON "A MURDERER" AND OTHERS SUGGESTING THAT ALL AMERICANS "GO TO TEXAS".

BEFORE LEAVING FOR THE BRITISH EMBASSY, THEY DECORATED THE AMERICAN MISSION WITH RED FEZES - A SYMBOL CLAIMING AMERICAN VASSALAGE TO TURKEY. BY THE TIME THEY REACHED THE BRITISH EMBASSY A STRONG POLICE CORDON HAD BEEN DRAWN AROUND THE BUILDING AND THE DOORS HAD BEEN LOCKED.

UNABLE TO PRESENT A RESOLUTION CALLING FOR THE WITHDRAWAL OF BRITISH TROOPS FROM CYPRUS, THE STUDENTS AGAIN PLACED RED FEZES ON THE BUILDING AND MARCHED AWAY CHANTING ANTI-BRITISH SLOGANS.
