  • Description

STUDENTS AT THE LONDON SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS TODAY (FRIDAY) DEFIED AND ORDER TO CLOSE THE SCHOOL AND STAYED INSIDE THE BUILDING READY FOR NEXT SUNDAY'S BIG ANTI-VIETNAM WAR MARCH.

THE CLOSURE OF THE SCHOOL WAS ORDERED THIS MORNING BY THE DIRECTOR, DR. WALTER ADAMS, AFTER 200 STUDENTS HAD CAMPED IN THE SCHOOL BUILDING OVERNIGHT.

A BLOCK OF STUDENTS PARKED THEMSELVES ON THE STEPS OF THE MAIN ENTRANCE TO PREVENT THE DOORS BEING SHUT. THE STUDENTS WERE HOPING TO KEEP THE SCHOOL OPEN OVER THE WEEKEND TO USE AS A SANCTUARY FOR DEMONSTRATORS TAKING PART IN THE SUNDAY MARCH.

ABOUT 50,000 PEOPLE ARE EXPECTED TO TAKE PART IN THE DEMONSTRATION ON SUNDAY. IT IS BEING ORGANISED BY SEVERAL BODIES. BUT BREAKAWAY GROUPS HAVE THREATENED TO HEAD FOR THE TARGETS LIKE THE AMERICAN EMBASSY, WHICH ARE NOT ON THE MAIN ROUTE.

DR. ADAMS TODAY POSTED A NOTICE SAYING HE HAD AUTHORITY FROM THE SCHOOL GOVERNORS TO CLOSE THE SCHOOL AND STAFF FORMED ALINE ACROSS THE MAIN ENTRANCE TO KEEP OTHER STUDENTS FROM JOINING THOSE ALREADY INSIDE. BUT STUDENTS CONTINUALLY BROKE THROUGH THE LINE, CHEERED ON BY THOSE INSIDE THE BUILDING.
