  • Description

Devastating floods have hit the Indian states. Worst hit Patna, the capital city of Bihar. Much of the city lies under 10 feet of water (3 metres).

All communications with Patna were severed and a phone link was not re-established until Wednesday (27 August).

Medical and food supplies have been airlifted ;into the area, including 5,000 cans of drinking water. Thousands of people have been stranded and have not eaten in two days.

The floods have been caused by the monsoon rains that have swelled the Ganges River.

Although the Bihar area is prone to floods, the severity of the overflow has been described as unprecedented.

Everywhere there are scenes of people trudging through the dirty water carrying meagre provisions. Although there have been no deaths reported so far, there is great concern epidemics may follow in the flood's wake.

In the neighbouring states of Orissa and Uttar Pradesh, floods have also caused widespread damage.
