    The Egyptian cabinet held a "crisis meeting" in Cairo on Wednesday (26 January) to discuss state security. The meeting followed the discovery of four communist groups alleged to have been trying to overthrow president Anwar Sadat. Egyptian Prosecutor-General, Ibrahim Kalyoubi, said police uncovered the underground groups during investigations in to last week's food price riots in Cairo.

    SYNOPSIS: The cabinet meeting was held in Prime Minister Mamdouh Salem's office.

    Egypt's deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ismail Fahmi was the first to arrive.

    He was followed by Mr Salem, who chaired the meeting in the absence of President Sadat.

    Defence Minister Muhammad al-Gamassi also attend.

    The four clandestine groups have been named as the Egyptian communist Party, the Communist Labour Party, the Revolution Current and the January Eight Organisation. Egyptian newspapers have accused the Soviet Union of being behind the food riots in which 79 people were killed. And an official statement issued by the Egyptian Government said there was a Communist plot to burn down Cairo during the riots.
