Background: The Kidnapped Israeli Consul-general in Turkey Ephraim Elron was found shot dead in an Istanbul apartment on Sunday (23 May) as 30,000 troops combed the city in a massive curfew and search operation. Our film shows Embassies under guard and the man who is standing-in for the dead Consul-general at the Israeli Embassy, Mr. Revven Ben-Eliezer. The curfew was imposed from midnight on Saturday, the day after the deadline for the release of all political prisoners from Turkish jails, set by the Consul-General's kidnappers, - four armed men belonging to the extreme left-wing Turkish Peoples Liberation Army.
SYNOPSIS: The kidnapped Israeli Consul-Genera in Istanbul, Mr Ephraim Elron, was found dead in an apartment block early on Sunday morning. He had been shot through the head. A young girl was arrested. The body was found during a massive search operation by 30,00 troops, who combed the city looking for the Consul-General. At the same time, Embassies and diplomatic missions were guarded by police. Here the police are outside the British Embassy. The Turkish government has made a clear stand on diplomatic kidnappings. The idea of negotiating with the kidnappers has been rejected. And the government wants to pass a new law, making kidnapping an offence punishable by death.
The United states Embassy - one of the most likely targets as kidnappings here continue by the extreme left-wing Turkish People's Liberation army, which claimed credit for this incident. Four men seized Mr Elron, and threatened to shoot him unless the Turkish Government released all its political prisoner by Friday. The government refused. After discovering the body, the Istanbul Martial Law command issued a statement saying the envoy had been found dead, and described his killers as "men having no relation to the principles of humanity". The government is trying to eliminate the risk of another such confrontation. A heavy guard has been thrown around the West German Embassy... they're among the most often hit diplomatic missions around the world since more and more so-called liberation armies have followed the Palestine Liberation Army in using the kidnapping of outsiders as a means of pressure.
In the office of the murdered Israel Consul-General is his stand-in, Mr Revven Ben-Eliezer. He's counsellor at the Embassy, and arrived in Istanbul after the kidnapping.
The search operation was aided by a massive curfew. The only source of information was the radio, even inside the Israeli Embassy.
