    About 40 people, including dissident poet Kim Chi-Ha were freed from jail in Seoul on Saturday night (February 15) after President Park Chung Hee announced he was releasing most of the 200 people jailed last year for anti-Government activities.

    It was the President's first conciliatory stop since last Wednesday's national referendum in which South Korean overwhelmingly supported the country's tough new constitution of lat 1972.

    A total of 203 people, about half of them students, were jailed under emergency decrease issued by the President early last year to crush protest against the constitution, and to forestall on alleged plot by students and underground leftists to overthrow the Government and set up a pro-North Korean regime. Eight of the arrested were sentenced to death, 13 others including the post to life imprisonment and the rest to jail terms of up to 20 years.
