INTRODUCTION: It's been confirmed that all 22 people aboard died when a Swedish domestic airliner crashed in Stockholm on Saturday (15 January).

SYNOPSIS: A spokesman for Linjeflyg, the Swedish airline which had leased the Vickers, Viscount turbo-prop aircraft from another Swedish company said 19 passengers and three crew were on the scheduled flight from Christianstad in southern Sweden. The plan crashed in a car park near several houses and a block of flats in the suburb of Spaanga at it came in to land at Stockholm's Bromma Airport. Several care were destroyed by the subsequent blaze, but no-one on the ground was injured. Visibility at the time was poor.

Eyewitnesses in nearby houses said the aircraft was making a normal approach from the west towards the airport when it suddenly nose-dived into the ground. One said it crashed about 10 metres (yards) from some buildings. It was a miracle it didn't hit any of the terraced houses in the area, and that the children who usually played in the snow in the car park were not there, said the same witness.

Another eyewitness said she looked from her flat window and saw the blast. She felt strong shock waves and saw a huge tongue of fire rise from the wreckage, She said. Police said most of the victims were believed to have been Swedish.

The crash started a fire on one corner of the apartment block, but firemen prevented the blaze from causing much damage. Rescue workers had to wait for more than an hour after the crash before they could approach the remains to seek survivors.

The plane had set out from Malmoe, and picked up passengers at Christianstad, Vaexjoe and Joenkoeping. It had apparently been flying normally, and only lost radio contact at the moment of the crash.

The crash was the worst in Sweden since November, 1964, when a domestic airliner crashed while landing at Aengelhom - killing 31 people. That was the worst air disaster in the country.
