  • Description

SIXTEEN PEOPLE ARE KNOWN TO HAVE DIED WHEN A FIVE-STOREY GOVERNMENT BUILDING IN BRUSSELS, BELGIUM, COLLAPSED TODAY (MONDAY). WITH A NUMBER STILL BELIEVED TO BE TRAPPED, AND MANY SERIOUSLY INJURED, THE DEAD ROLL MAY BE MUCH HIGHER.

THE OFFICES WERE USED BY THE STATISTICAL DEPARTMENT OF THE ECONOMIC MINISTRY, AND MOST OF THE STAFF WERE TEMPORARY WORKERS COMPILING A NATIONAL CENSUS. EXCAVATIONS WERE BEING CARRIED OUT ON AN ADJOINING PROPERTY TO PREPARE FOUNDATIONS FOR AN UNDERGROUND GARAGE. WHEN THE BUILDING BEGAN TO SHAKE, MANY OF THE EMPLOYEES INSIDE MANAGED TO REACH THE STREET.

RESCUE WORK BEGAN IMMEDIATELY. TROOPS WERE CALLED INTO ASSIST FIREMEN, RED CROSS AND OTHER WORKERS. THEIR TASK WAS MADE DANGEROUS BY THE DANGLING CONCRETE FLOORS STILL ATTACHED TO THE WALLS OF THE BUILDING LEFT STANDING.

EYEWITNESS REPORTS SAID THERE WAS A SUDDEN AND INTENSE TREMOR, THEN A REPORT, AND THE WALLS OF THE BUILDING COLLAPSED IN A COULD OF DUST.

FROM THE PILES OF BRICKS, PLASTER AND SLABS OF CONCRETE, THE RESCUE WORKERS BROUGHT THE INJURED AND DEAD, TO BE RUSHED BY FLEETS OF AMBULANCES TO HOSPITAL, AS NIGHT FELL, FIREMEN SAID THERE WAS "PRACTICALLY NO HOPE" OF FINDING MORE SURVIVORS.

(AS SOON AS HE WAS TOLD FOR THE DISASTER, KING BAUDOUIN VISITED THE SCENE AND WATCHED RESCUE OPERATIONS.

THE WORKERS WERE WORKING ON INFORMATION GATHERED IN THE NATIONAL CENSUS TAKEN LAST DECEMBER - THE FIRST BELGIAN CENSUS SINCE 1947. THE DESTRUCTION OF PART OF THE ARCHIVES MEANS THAT ANOTHER CENSUS MAY HAVE TO BE HELD FOR SOME AREAS.)
