After arriving in Athens last Friday (2 April) on a three-day official visit, the Foreign Minister of the United Arab Republic ???, Mr. Mahmoud Riad, began talks on the Middle East crisis with the Prime Minister of Greece, Mr. George Papadopoulos.
SYNOPSIS: The Foreign Minister of the UAR, Mr. Mahmoud Riad, arrived in Athens last Friday on a three-day official tour. Mr. Riad is in Athens as part of a European tour to try to gain support for Egypt's Middle East peace demands. They want the withdrawal of Israeli forces from all occupied territory. Before his meeting with the Greek Prime Minister, Mr. Riad expressed his thanks to the Greek government for their support of the Arab cause. He said that the support of the Greek government is of great help "when we are fighting an invasion and are trying to liberate our territories from foreign occupation."
It was the deputy Prime Minister, Mr. Stylianos Pattakos, who invited the Egyptian Minister to Greece. He has himself been on a visit to Egypt recently. Mr. Riad accused the Israelis of using the "law of the jungle"....and said that if Israel does not withdraw from her land, Egypt would force her to.
Later, Mr. Riad met the Prime Minister of Greece, Mr. Papadopoulos. The Greek government is very sensitive about its relations with Arab countries, because 50,000 Greek nationals live there. It is also trying to improve trade relations with Arab and African countries. A Greek newspaper said that Greece had every reason to support peace moves in the Middle East, because any resumption of hostilities would only serve the "aims of the red intruder and his policy in the Eastern Mediterranean". The next stop of Mr. Riad's Europe tour is Teheran.
