    French President Valery Giscard d'Estaing and the President of the Council of State of Guinea-Bassi, Luiz Cabral witnessed the signing of a co-operation agreement on behalf of their countries in Paris on Monday (12 April).

    The agreement was initialled last December and signed by the French and Guinea-Bassi foreign ministers on Monday. It calls for France to give Guinea-Bassi financial assistance for agriculture and the training of technicians.

    The signing ceremony took place at the Elysee Palace and delegations from the two countries also discussed the creation of a joint culture centre and co-operation in education, which is due to begin in June.

    After the meeting, M. Cabral told newsmen that his country didn't contemplate joining the Franc Zone at this stage, but added that discussions on the possibility of Guinea-Bassi becoming a member of the West African Economic Community would open shortly.

    "We have great admiration for France and we found understanding on the part of President Giscard when we explained our problems to him," M. Cabral said.

    M. Cabral also said that Guinea Bassi would be sending a delegation to the meeting of French speaking African heads of state, scheduled for Paris next month.
