  • Description

Monsoon floods and landslides in the northeastern corner of Bangladesh have brought new misery to the people of that country -- still suffering the after effects of last december's bitter war.

The area worst affected is the district of Sylhet. Accurate casualty figures have not been possible -- but it is believed at least 50 people have died.

Officials estimates say 175-thousand families are homeless in Sylhet. Low-lying farmland has been badly hit as swollen rivers burst their banks and inundated hundreds of thousands of acres.

(The same monsoon storms have also ???d flooding in neighbouring India - particularly in the state of Assam, where a large number of rivers and tributaries were reported to be in flood.)
