  • Description

President Nixon's special fact-finding committee, set up in an attempt to negotiate a settlement over the coast to coast dock strike which has crippled shipping for nearly a hundred days, met with labour leaders -- including Harry Bridges of the International Longshoremen and Warehousemen's Union and Edward Flynn of the Pacific Maritime Association -- in San Francisco on Tuesday (5 October).

The special committee was scheduled to report to President Nixon later on Wednesday (6 October) to advise him whether or not to invoke the Taft-Hartley law which could force the men back to work for 80-day "cooling off" period. Both management and unions are sceptical about the possible injunction, feeling that either side could use the 80 days to prepare for an even longer dispute.
