  • Description

Another team of staff members of the International Commission of Control and Supervision (ICCS) overseeing the Vietnam ceasefire, arrived in Hue on Thursday (8 Feb) to join the team already based there.

The small group arrived in the old Imperial Capital only hours after another reported attack by North Vietnamese shells.

The newly arrived men joined the main body of ICCS members at a hotel in Hue, and discussed problems of accommodation and communication which the ICCS forces might face when they arrive to police the peace.

This advance team is due to stay in Hue for at least another ten days.

SYNOPSIS: Staff members of the International Commission of Control and Supervision flew into Phu Bai airport in Hue, South Vietnam on Thursday. Only hours earlier, North Vietnamese shells were reported to have landed near the old Imperial Capital.

The group, including Canadian and Indonesian members arrived from Saigon to discuss progress with their colleagues, who've already been in Hue for four days. The force hopes to move into all the reported areas of fighting within the next day or two, but the meeting in Hue city is to discuss accommodation, and communications.

Despite announcements that the ICCS was ready to physically go into all areas of reported fighting, the reports of truce violations still come in. These violations have made it difficult for the team to do its job. Three of the latest attacks reported were close to Hue, but nobody was reported killed or injured.

All the commission members were scheduled to call at Da Nang within hours of landing in Hue. They were then scheduled to return to Hue, where they'd stay until there was an accurate assessment of the ceasefire progress.

The complete control commission team is due to stay in the heart of Hue for at least ten days.
