  • Description

Baton-wielding police and firemen using hoses restored order on the streets of Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA, Feb 24 after whites and negroes had clashed.

Trouble began Feb 23 when young negroes entered a snack-bar for sit-down meals. Previously they had been served standing. Whites entered the snack-bar and scuffles began.

Next day disturbances broke out in the streets. The mayor then called in the police and fire brigade who hosed whites and negroes impartially. Arrested were made, and some of the rioters received 50 dollar fines.

Meanwhile negro "passive resistance" was spreading from Tennessee, a so-called "border State" to the Deep South. Incidents were reported from North Carolina and Alabama.

There was also a race incident at Punta Gorda, Florida, Feb 22. Despite police demands young negroes and whites refused to break up their baseball game in a "white" park. The whites said a previous match was in a negro school-yard and this was the return fixture. Police made no arrests, but took names and addresses of white youths.
