  • Description

Using armoured cars, machine-guns and semi-automatic rifles Dutch troops and police this weekend (April 22) mounted a strict guard upon the Indonesian Embassy in the Hague and the Indonesian Ambassador's Residence.

The action followed reports that refugees from the south Molucca islands--formerly part of the Dutch East Indies--planned to kidnap the Ambassador.

The report of the kidnap plan comes as South Moluccans in the Netherlands--perhaps as many as eight-thousand--prepare for a mass meeting on tuesday (April 25th) at which the announcement of a "free Republic" of the south Moluccas is to be made.

The South Moluccan refugees--also known as Amboinese--settled in Holland when the Indonesian Republic was established in 1950. They have recently expressed their disapproval of their own situation, and two years ago occupied the Indonesian Ambassador's residence in the Hague as a protest.
