  • Description

Eire's Prime Minister Eamon de Valera was filmed by VISNEWS making his last publici speech in Dublin June 15 before retiring to stand for the Presidency. Film taken in Co.Dublin June 17 shows the two presidential candidates, Eamon de Valera and General Sean MacEoin, casting their votes.

A rally at College Green, Dublin, June 15, where de Valera spoke to an enthusiastic audience, marked the end of the stormy career of Eire's most colourful politician over the past forty years. The esteem shown for the 76-year-old outgoing Prime Minister was not quite unanimous - several agitators had to be removed from the meeting by the police.

On polling day June 17 the ex-Premier cast his vote at Booterstown, Co.Dublin, while his opponent, 65-year-old General MacEoil of the Fine Gael opposition party, recorded his vote at Donnybrock.

The official end of de Valera's Premiership came June 17 when he handed his seals of office to President Sean O'Kelly. The Taoiseach (Premier) land his Government, who are demmed by the constitution to have resigned with him, will carry on their duties until the Dail (Lower House) elects their successor June 23.

Voting in Eire's presidential election June 17, and in the referendum on proportional representation, was less heavy than in the recent general elections. Estimates put polling activity at under 70 per cent of the 1,680,000 electoral register.

Results of the presidential election is expected to be known late June 18. The outcome of Eire's first referendum, to decide whether proportional representation for election of Dail members shall be replaced, will be published later.

Opposition parties want to see proportional representation retained as a safeguard for the minorities, while de Valera would prefer a single-seat system similar to Britain's.
