  • Description

As cheering crowds in London Piccadilly Circus greeted news of a Conservative victory in the 388 overnight returns, Labour leader Hugh Gaitskell and Premier Harold Macmillan granted interviews to VISNEWS cameramen.

Realisation of Labour's defeat came early in the night results. Soon after hearing of his personal victory at Leeds South, Labour Party leader Hugh Gaitskell, in an interview said; "Well I must admit in view of what results have come in so far, that it looks as if we shall have another Conservative Government." This bitter acknowledgement resulted from an assessment of early results. The Labour Party have only once gained a working majority in 59 years of campaigning.

In a very cautious mood Premier Macmillan answered thus to congratulations by our interviewer; " All the results are not yet in, and being of Scots birth I am naturally cautious." He went on to say that he thought the rest of the world were watching the British General Election with great interest, and he could not recall a speech he had made that did not consist of at last twenty-five per cent foreign affairs topics.

The Conservatives have created a precedent by winning three consecutive General Elections. They gained nineteen of the earlier results, lost three to Labour and one to the Liberal Party. The remaining 242 declarations will be made known later on Oct 9.
