  • Description

A huge crowd headed by Bolivia's President Hugo banzer, his cabinet and the armed services chiefs attended the funeral of sixty seven people in La Paz on Tuesday (28 October). They were all killed in one of Bolivia's worst air disasters the previous day.

The 'plane, which crashed in the Andes foothills northeast of La Paz, was mainly carrying army officers and their families returning from a holiday weekend. There were no survivors.

Two of the dead were nephews of President Banzer and were junior army officers. Twelve children were also among those killed.

Tuesday was declared a day of mourning by the government. Hundreds wept as the funeral procession with white coffins for the dead children passed through the city's central square.

The exact cause of the crash is not yet known but Bolivian Air Force officials said there was no suspicion of sabotage.
