Dr. Luis Herrera Campins has been nominated Presidential candidate of the Christian Socialist Party for next year's general elections in Venezuela.
SYNOPSIS: Dr. Herrera's nomination took place amid scenes sometimes approaching hysteria at a party congress in Caracas, the Venezuelan capital on Friday (19 August). About 3,000 delegates attended the three-day congress including Dr. Rafael Caldera, former President of Venezuela.
Dr. Caldera himself received a warm welcome when he arrived at the conference hall.
But delegates had reserved the biggest and the most enthusiastic reception for the newly-elected Presidential candidate who was mobbed as he entered the hall. Dr. Herrera's nomination came only after their original choice, Aristides Beaujon, had announced his decision to withdraw himself as the candidate. Senor Beaujon took the congress by complete surprise as he read a prepared statement. He gave no specific reasons why he was stepping down. But he pledged his full support for Dr. Herrera and the Party.
Dr. Caldera was among the first to congratulate the man who has come so close to becoming Venezuela's President himself. He then joined Dr. Herrera in waving to the cheering delegates. He said he would actively support Dr. Herrera during his campaign.
If the delegates had been rather taken aback by Senor Beaujon's unexpected announcement, the choice of his successor seemed to send them into ecstasy.
The reception give to Dr. Herrera was described by observers as "staggering". It climaxed a day which had seen much activity and several meeting among top Party officials. Dr. Herrera was generous in paying tribute to Senor Beaujon, who, he said, had contributed enormously towards Party unity. It was a "wonderful" demonstration of unity" and would do much to uplift Party morale. Dr. Herrera pledged that if elected he would fulfil the promises made by the Party to voters.
