  • Description

A new era in sending television news-films by telephone cable with the first royal pictures to cross over four-thousand miles from Canada to the UK with the arrival June 18 of Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh at St. John's Airport at the start of their Canadian tour.

Difficult lighting conditions and the long journey under the Atlantic marred picture quality: Canadian air controllers linked by radio to the Comet lV's Commandant as fog threatened to divert the aircraft. But the fog cleared in time and the Comet touched down in a pale sun exactly on schedule.

Then the next pictures of the Queen received on a GBP15000 machine kept in secret at the BBC's television headquarters ... pioneering film of the reception at the airport: the Queen in a loose coat and straw hat shaking hands with the Governor-General Mr. Massey, Prime Minister Diefenbaker and inspecting a guard of honour.
