Background: More than 15,000 women, including groups from Holland, France and Portugal, demonstrated in London yesterday (21 June) in support of legalised abortion.

Main target of the rally -- reckoned to be London's biggest demonstration since the mid- 1960s -- was proposed new legislation to restrict abortion to cases of serious medical need, and make it almost impossible for foreign women to come to Britain for abortions.

Since abortion was legalised in 1967, Britain's laws governing the operation have become among the most liberal in the world.

Now the new Bill before the British Parliament, sponsored by a Glasgow M.P., would make abortion illegal for all but the strictest medical cases. Several other M.P.s. opposed to the Bill joined yesterday's protest march.

Simultaneously, religious groups opposed to abortion organised a counter demonstration in Trafalgar Square. It attracted only 300 supporters.
