Background: Mr. Samora Machel, President of the Mozambique Liberation Movement -- Frelimo -- last week attended talks on the projected independence of Angola.
Mr. Machel flew into Lusaka on Wednesday (2 October) from Dar Es Salaam in Tanzania. He accompanied Dr. Agostinho Neto, the leader of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola -- MPLA.
Mr. Machel attended talks between Dr. Neto and Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda.
The main topics concerning the three are developments within the faction-ridden MPLA, progress on unity between the three nationalist movements fighting in Agnola and projected negotiations on Angola's independence.
Portugal has agreed in principle to the territory's freedom. But the lack of unity between the independence groups had hampered efforts to establish a nationalist Government in Luanda.
Mr. Machel apparently attended the talks in an advisory capacity.
SYNOPSIS: Zambian Government officials, including Prime Minister Chona and the Secretary General of the ruling party, Grey Zulu, farewelled Mr. Machel.
