  • Description

THE FIRST ASIAN KARTING PRIX HELD IN TANAUAN, ABOUT 50 MILES SOUTH OF MANILA, THE CAPITAL OF THE PHILIPPINES, ON SUNDAY (17 JAN) WAS SEEN BY A CROWD OF THREE THOUSAND SPECTATORS.

TWENTY-EIGHT YEAR OLD HONGKONG POLICE, OFFICER, D.T.L. MACDONALD, WON THE EVENT FROM A FIELD OF OVER TWENTY CRACK COMPETITORS, MANY FROM HONGKONG. HE FINISHED THE 40-LAP CIRCUIT (17.1 MILES) IN 28 MINUTES 43.2 SECONDS. HIS PRIZE WAS A TROPHY AND 100 POUNDS STERLING.

THE SECOND AND THIRD PLACES WENT TO ARSENIO LAUREL AND ROBERTO LUNA, RESPECTIVELY, BOTH OF THE PHILIPPINES.

ARSENIO LAUREL LED THE FIELD FOR 32 LAPS AND APPEARED A CLEAR WINNER OF THE RACE AS HE SURGED TO A HALF-A-LAP LEAD OVER MACDONALD, HIS NEAREST RIVAL. BUT LAUREL BLEW UP THAT ADVANTAGE WHEN HE WAS THROWN OFF THE ASPHALT WHILE TRYING TO OVERTAKE A TAILENDER. MACDONALD SPED PAST THE STALLED LAUREL AND CROSSED THE FINISH LINE WITH THE CHECKERED FLAG.

POINTS WERE AWARDED ONLY TO THE TOP SEVEN FINISHERS, WITH THE WINNER GETTING SEVEN POINTS, THE RUNNER-UP SIX, AND SO ON DOWN THE LINE.
