  • Description

A New world belly-dancing record was set up in London recently when Soraya -- 'the Queen of Belly-Dancers' -- wiggled away for 31 hours, 1 minute and 10 seconds.

At about 1,800 wiggles an hour, Soraya beat the previous unofficial record of 27 hours. But she lost 14 pounds (about 6 killogrammes) in weight and wore out 20 pairs of dancing shoes.

Soraya persuaded the insurance brokers, Lloyd's to insure her belly for GBP 50,000 sterling (about 90,000 US dollars) for the record-breaking wiggle. But a doctor was sure that it wasn't at much risk. He said that she was "very, very fit --I expected her to be in a lot more distress."
The record breaking dance took place at a Turkish restaurant in London. The owner of the restaurant, Joseph Mourat, promised Soraya that he would pay her GBP 10 sterling (about 18 US dollars) for every minute that she dance beyond the old record.

With her new record, Soraya stood to earn GBP 2,400 sterling (about 4,300 US dollars). But Mr. Mourat decided to give her a cheque for GBP 5,000 sterling (about 9,000 US dollars) and to issue a challenge to any other belly-dancers to make an attempt at Soraya's record: "Beat this and I'll give them GBP 25,000 sterling" (about 45,000 US dollars) he said.
