  • Description

THE 28-YEAR-OLD AUSTRALIAN LONG-DISTANCE RUNNER, RON CLARKE, ENDED HIS RECORD-BREAKING WORLD TOUR WITH A FINE 5,000-METRES VICTORY IN PARIS YESTERDAY (SATURDAY).

THE WIN, IN DRIZZLING RAIN AND ON A SOGGY TRACK, WAS 6.6 SECONDS OUTSIDE HIS OWN WORLD RECORD OF 13 MINUTES 25.8 SECONDS. THIRTY-FIVE YARDS BEHIND IN SECOND PLACE WAS BRITAIN'S MIKE WIGGS. THIRD WAS MOHAMMED GAMOUDI, THE TUNISIAN OLYMPIC 10,000-METRES SILVER MEDALLIST.

THE BAD WEATHER AND THE ABSENCE OF THE FRENCH TRACK IDOL, MICHEL JAZY, WHO BEAT CLARKE IN THEIR RECENT 5,000-METRES CLASH IN HELSINKI, KEPT THE CROWD DOWN TO LESS THAN 6,000 BUT THE SPECTATORS TRIED TO CHANT CLARKE TO YET ANOTHER WORLD RECORD.

IN HIS SEVEN-WEEK TOUR OF THE UNITED STATES, HE SET 15 OF THEM - IN 17 RACES.
