  • Description

Left-wing representatives of 14 African and 13 Asian countries attended the opening session of the conference of the Executive Committee of the Afro-Asian Solidarity Congress in Beirut, Lebanon, Nov 10.

Lebanese Education Minister Kamal Jumblatt, the Druze leader of the Lebanese Socialist Progressive Parity and a leading figure in the 1958 civil war in Lebanon, was elected chairman of the conference.

After Executive Committee Secretary-General Youssef Sibahi reported on the past year's work, U.A.R. chief delegate Found Jalal read a message, smuggled from former Congolese Prime Minister Lumumba besieged in Leopoldville, calling for support of the "legal Government" of the Congo.

Mr Lumumba said in the message: "The next few months will be decisive not only in the Congo but in all Africa. This is the time the peoples of all Africa and Asia must take part in the battle."
There was a rumour before the conference opened that Mr Lumumba himself was going to be there but so far he had been unable to elude the guards of Congolese Army leader Mobutu around his residence.

Also absent at the opening session were delegations from North Korea and Ghana.

Among the Communist delegations were those from North Vietnam, the Soviet Union: and China whose representative - with a look of sympathy at the delegation from Kenya - attacked the U.S. for "infiltrating Kenya with a new colonialism of the most vicious kind under the guise of anti-colonial slogans"
Chairman Jumblatt in his opening speech said the Lebanese people and Government would remain attached to the principal of neutrality and wanted to maintain the best relations with Africa, Asia and the rest of the world.
